This year is the 90th anniversary of the historic Burton-on-Trent Bridge to Bridge swimming race, which first took place in 1932. As the name implies, the original race took place between the two famous Burton bridges, starting at the Ferry Bridge and ending 1.5km downstream at the Trent Bridge.
It became an annual event and continued until the war, restarting again in 1946. As pollution increase in the river the decision was made to move the event to Branston Gravel Pits, where it stayed until 1971 before being stopped due to safety concerns.
Burton Amateur Swimming Club revived the event in 1992 in the safety of the indoor Meadowside pool in the centre of Burton, where it has continued every year since. This year marks the 90th anniversary of that first event in 1932, and the year the Stanley Curtis Cup was donated by Tommy Curtis as the official race trophy in memory of his son who died in a tragic motorcycle accident.
GRM is proud not only to support the event as a sponsor, but also have one member of the team competing! Good luck to Paige Colling this weekend!
