We are proud to have a client base that spans the length and breadth of the country, but always get extra excited when we are asked to work on a local Burton on Trent project!
In the past we have worked on a range of local projects including Branston Locks development site and the new Battlestead Croft ground for Burton Rugby Club (both of which we can literally see from our head office window!)
Our latest project is on the platform of Burton on Trent train station. GRM was approached by Architects working on behalf of the Burton Rotary Club who have adopted the platform and are giving it a bit of TLC! So far they have cleared vegetation and created a number of flower beds to add a bit of colour and the next stage is to install a piece of public artwork.
The Rotary Club contacted Burton & South Derbyshire College and asked students to design a sculpture which recognised four local centres, namely The National Arboretum, The National Brewery Centre, The National Forest and St. George’s Park. The winning design was by Kyle Nevitt and is based on a series of words that showcase the four centres.
Our role in the project is to investigate the ground conditions and to design the base slab and foundations for the sculpture. This project presented a number of challenges which included working close to active and busy railway lines! Other challenges included getting equipment from the station level down to the platform and the historic development and alignment of the platforms.
The investigations involved a range of techniques including hand dug trial pits and window sampling with a modular rig that we were able to get onto the platform. All the work had to be undertaken in conjunction with operator East Midlands Railway and outside of peak train times to avoid timetable disruption.
The first two potential locations were un-suitable due to various obstructions in the made ground and voids; however, it was third time lucky and we were able to obtain sufficient information to enable our Structural Engineering team to design the slab and foundations.
We will provide an update when the statue is installed and officially unveiled!
