Six New Faces Join the GRM Team, plus a Returnee!

It has been a busy few months of recruitment here at GRM with a total of seven new positions including geologists, design technicians and a site inspector!

We thought the best way to introduce them was via a mugshot and a few self-penned sentences about their background and interests! So here goes:

Alfie Woolley (Assistant Geologist): I’m originally from Stockport and had a range of jobs in the past, including a sales assistant, linen boy, waiter, housekeeper, and snowboard instructor! In 2019, I moved to Derby to undertake a geology degree at the University of Derby. My passion for geology began when I discovered my first fossil at Robin Hood’s Bay (North Yorkshire) at age 10. GRM has been instrumental in helping me develop my engineering and geological skills, allowing me to grow as a professional in the geological field. In my free time, I enjoy playing bass guitar and piano, producing music, snowboarding, studying history, and gaming.

Cameron Fitzgerald (Assistant Geologist): I joined GRM in August and have already been working with the team on a range of desk-based Phase I and II reports for clients, plus accompanying fieldwork. Everyone has been so welcoming, and I can’t wait to see what projects come up next and where they take me. Before GRM, I graduated from Durham University with a bachelor’s degree in Geology, which gave me a good understanding of geological features and processes to bring into the work I’ve been doing. When it comes to my free time, football and golf are my sports of choice, but I’m no stranger to spending a few nights staying up late on the PC playing games – at the weekend, of course!

Hamza Hussain (Design Technician): I’m Hamza, I’m 22 years old, and I recently started working as a graduate structural engineer at GRM. Prior to GRM, I completed a degree in Civil Engineering at Cardiff University and spent a year in industry at a structural consultancy. I was born and bred in Burton, and I am a massive football fan and support Liverpool FC! This also means the Fantasy Premier League is essential; with the new season here, I am aiming for a top 3 finish in the GRM league!

Jordan Smith (Design Technician): After studying Computer Games Design at university and doing a brief stint in video editing, I found the perfect opportunity to join the design team here at GRM. It is great to combine my design interests with my work role. The only difference is that I now help build things in the real world instead of virtual ones!

Lewis Haller (Assistant Geologist): I’m originally from Surrey and went to the University of Birmingham to study Palaeobiology and Palaeoenvironments. I ended up focusing my dissertation on dinosaur footprints, something I never would have considered when I started university. As well as working in a field as part of my job, I also spend much of my spare time in fields doing medieval reenactments! I started this at university as there was a society there, and I’ve not stopped since. I cover the period of 1066-1265AD and the Wars of the Roses, so if you want to know arguably too much about a very niche period of history, let me know!

Mark Smith (Site Inspector):  This is my second spell working here at GRM, with my first stint way back between 1998 and 2001. I am excited to return and work on a range of site inspection projects for GRM clients. I live locally in Swadlincote and enjoy martial arts, especially Wing Chun (a form of Southern Chinese kung fu) and Eskrima (the national martial art of the Philippines). I am also a proud grandad which takes up a lot of my spare time!

Steffan Williams (Assistant Geologist): I am originally from Wales but moved to Jersey when I was 7 and then to York when I was 10. I went to university in Sheffield to study Geography, which included completing a placement year with VHE as a Geo-environmental engineer. I’ve now moved to Nottingham, and you can find me running, playing tennis, and going on walks in the Peak District or supporting Wales in international rugby (and football if they qualify!).

We currently have one outstanding vacancy for a Geotechnical Engineer. Details and information on what it is like to work at GRM, including feedback from existing staff, can be found on the Careers Page of our website.
