The teams at GRM are trained to ‘expect the unexpected’ when it comes to site investigations, and safety is always paramount especially when a potential risk has been identified.
Areas with known historic mine workings are one such example, and while falling through the ground into an abandoned mineshaft all sounds very ‘Indiana Jones’, the focus for our engineers is more about health and safety than finding long-lost treasure!
Our teams are therefore required to use a harness and winch, and be suitably tethered to something that will hold their weight, such as an excavator or spare excavator bucket.
We recently ran a Harness & Lanyard Training Course for those members of the team likely to encounter these risks. The course was run by Gaskell Safety and covered a range of topics including:
- The causes of accidents and how they can be prevented
- Legislation relevant to harness inspection
- Systems of work relevant to harness inspection
- Inspecting, recording, removing or rectifying unsuitable harnesses and equipment
- How to store harnesses correctly
- Using different techniques to inspect a range of equipment
Feedback from the team was very positive, although several still believe it is only a matter of time before they stumble across hidden treasure. At least now they will be safe and secure!
