Earlier this year we ran an article about our ongoing staff training program, which includes the identification and site management of unexploded ordnance (often referred to as UXO): Review of Unexploded Ordnance Kicks-Off Busy Year of Staff Training & Development
This training came in handy recently for one of our team (James) while conducting site investigations at a former military training base.
James was given a UXO briefing at the start of the job (trial pitting) and there was a UXO engineer present for SI works in certain areas, but on his way back to the van at the end of the day he noticed a potential UXO partially uncovered next to a pond. There was a high probability of it being a dummy/practice bomb, but nevertheless it was treated with caution and the area was cordoned off overnight to prevent access. The UXO engineer investigated it the next day and confirmed there was no risk of detonation (no charge material was present).
Suffice to say James was proud of his ‘find’ and even more pleased when it was confirmed as a practice bomb!
