Locating recorded mine shafts is achieved by ground investigation techniques including probe drilling, trial trenching or geophysics. Once located the depth, nature, and integrity of the backfill needs to be determined by probe drilling.
These techniques can also be used to identify wells and deep boreholes (which may be mistaken for mine shafts). These are all often dealt with in a similar manner.
