As GRM look to recruit another graduate geoscientist (see details here), it is worth reflecting on the importance that both in-house training and external professional development plays in retaining employees.
We operate in a sector that requires a wide range professional and technical expertise. Recruiting people with those skills is just the starting point, and we have made it a priority at GRM to provide the best possible support in terms of their working environment and career development.
The results of this approach are clear to see. A recent staff survey (anonymous replies and run by an external company) revealed a very high level of satisfaction across a range of work-related areas including team morale, line manager support, job security and progression, and work-life balance. We have added some of the specific feedback comments to our careers page: Land, Your Perfect Career
Ongoing individual examples of career development include Callum Moller and Jack Croudace.
Callum joined GRM in 2019 as an Assistant Engineering Geologist following completion of a BSc in Geology at the University of Derby (almost 20% of our current team have been trained directly from graduate level). Over the last three years he has been mentored and tutored in the geotechnical ‘dark arts’, which has included a fair share of fieldwork and being up to his neck in peat bogs!
We were naturally delighted when Callum recently expressed a desire to continue his academic qualifications. We discussed options with him and have been able to offer work-based and financial support in his application to the University of Birmingham to study an MSc in Geotechnical Engineering.
Jack recently joined the IT and Business Development team at GRM following A Levels, a BTEC course, and a short period of work experience. He is now keen to get a work-related degree, and GRM were delighted when he received an unconditional offer for the BSc Hons Computer Science course at Arden University. We have provided financial support for this online degree, which can be undertaken in conjunction with his role at GRM.
